What is Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass operation for acid reflux?
The gastric bypass is a commonly performed weight loss operation. But it is also very effective to control acid reflux. Acid is produced by special cells in the lining of your stomach. In a bypass operation, the vast majority of the acid-producing cells are left in the part of the stomach that has been separated from your oesophagus (gullet). So, after a bypass, acid does not have a path to flow back into the oesophagus. If your BMI is more than 35 kg/m2 and you need surgery for acid reflux, then you should consider a bypass very seriously. Several issues, over and above control of acid reflux need to be considered for a bypass, and careful and detailed discussion is essential.
